How much smaller will my file get?+

Lossless files (WAV, FLAC) shrink by 80–90%. For MP3s it depends on the original bitrate — a 320kbps file compressed to 128kbps shrinks by about 60%.

Will it sound much worse?+

'Recommended (128kbps)' matches typical streaming quality — hard to tell apart in everyday listening. For voice recordings (meetings, lectures), even 'Strong (64kbps)' remains perfectly intelligible.

Are my files uploaded to a server?+

No. Compression happens entirely inside your browser and your file is never sent anywhere.

What decides an audio file's size?

File size is simply bitrate × duration. A 4-minute song at 320kbps is about 9.6MB; the same song at 128kbps is about 3.8MB. Compression means lowering the bitrate — using less data per second of sound.

Lossless formats (WAV, FLAC) start out far bigger, so the gains are dramatic: a 3-minute WAV is over 30MB, but under 3MB as a 128kbps MP3.

How to pick a compression level

'Recommended (128kbps)' is the right default for most situations — it matches the standard quality tier of major streaming services, so casual listening on earphones sounds the same as the original.

For voice-first files — meetings, lectures, calls — use 'Strong (64kbps)'. Speech carries much less information than music and stays clear at low bitrates. If you're archiving music you care about, 'High quality (192kbps)' is the safe pick.

When is this useful?

Upload limits are the most common reason: email attachments (25MB), community forums, assignment portals and messenger transfer caps all become passable after compression.

It also pays off when archiving dozens of lecture or meeting recordings — voice files compressed to 64kbps fit five times more audio into the same storage.
